There are a host of rules and laws regarding how candidates and parties can be placed on a voting ballot in the U.S. The petition requirements in some states are nonexistent, while in some stated you can have tens of thousands of required signatures. These petition requirements often keep voter choices off the ballot, whether they are in the form of candidates, initiatives, or political parties. These petition requirements are often used as a bludgeon with which to batter opponents of the incumbents, or those in power, out of having a chance. If you can’t get on the ballot, you can’t possibly get elected—this is the first and most important political struggle for many candidates, parties, and initiatives.
Collecting signatures can be a long and arduous process. In states like Oregon or Louisiana, you’ll collect signatures in the rain. In Arizona and Florida, you’ll do so in the blaring heat. In Minnesota and Michigan, you do so in the snow. The process of asking people to sign a petition, verifying their signature, having them fill out paperwork, seeking permission to petition in certain areas, finding capable and trusted petitioners, is all very complicated and taxing.
